The Sweet Dead Life: Casey's Playlist

In case you haven’t heard about, Joy Preble’s latest book, The Sweet Dead Life, I’m excited to share Casey’s Playlist.  But first, a little about the book:

"I found out two things today: One, I think I'm dying. And two, my brother is a perv."
So begins the diary of Jenna Samuels, who is having a very bad year. Her mother spends all day in bed. Dad  vanished when she was eight. Her older brother, Casey, tries to hold together what’s left of the family by working two after-school jobs—difficult, as he’s stoned all the time. To make matters worse, Jenna is sick. Really sick. When she collapses one day, Casey tries to race her to the hospital in their beat-up Prius and crashes instead. Jenna wakes up in the ER to find Casey beside her, looking pretty good. Better than ever, in fact. Downright . . . angelic. The flab and zits? Gone. Before long, Jenna figures out that her brother didn’t survive the accident at all, and she isn’t just sick; she’s being poisoned. Casey has been sent back to help Jenna find out who’s got it out for her, a mystery that leads to more questions about their mother’s depression and their father’s disappearance.

Casey Samuels used to have a pretty great, normal life. He played football—in fact he was on varsity as a freshman. He had a girlfriend named Lanie – blonde, cute, cheerleader type. He had a future – business major maybe. Something where he could use his gift of gab. And then his family fell apart. He had to quit football. His girlfriend broke up with him. He started smoking too much weed and hanging out with loser guys like Dave Pittman the local dealer and working two jobs to support his family. He loves his sister, though and he will do what it takes to take care of her. And then, there’s the car accident. And suddenly he’s Casey 2.0 Angel version. With wing nubs and a mission.

Casey’s playlists fall into a couple categories:

Pre-Angel Casey:
Because I Get High—Afroman
The Joker-Steve Miller Band
Dance with my Father—Luther Vandross
How it Feels—Tom Petty

Angel Casey:
Finish Line—Snow Patrol
Heard the World—OAR
My Hero—Foo Fighters

ELDER Review & Tour Post

I think of a better to kick off my birthday than celebrating release of ELDER, the final book in Raine Thomas' Firstborn Trilogy!  I have LOVED this series so much that I even went back and re-read the book that started my love of Estlorians, Becoming

Before I get to my review of ELDER, I'd like to share with you the trailer:

Well, what did you think??  If you haven't checked out the first two books in the Firstborn Trilogy, then check out Defy & Shift.  And don't forget about the books that started it all, The Daughters of Saraqael: Becoming, Central, & Foretold.
Check out The Prophecy (a Estlorian Short Story), which is currently free on Amazon
My Review:
What a way to end a trilogy!  I've been waiting to read Clara Kate's story since she is the oldest of the "Firstborn".  Clara Kate, or CK as her family calls her, reminds me so much of her mom, Amber.  While her story couldn't be as easy as it seemed on the human plane or else there wouldn't be a story.  The glimpse into CK & Ini-herit's relationship while in the human plane was beautiful and explained so much about the frustration CK has felt since returning.  Elder picks up with the action of Shift with CK, Sophia, Quincy, Zachariah, Ini-herit and the others trying to track down and rescue Tate and Ariana.  I'm still amazed as older Estlorian's demonstrate emotions in different situations.  ELDER is filled with action, heartbreak, laughs and of course some romance.  It's hard to talk about how much I LOVED this final book in the triliogy without revealing secrets.  There were several times when I felt like my heart was going to be ripped out, but then it was pieced back together.  The interactions between "Sparky" and Tate are priceless and Teige and Ariana are too sweet.  So the tension between CK and Ini-herit is so strong because their love on the human plane was so strong and Ini-herit needs a little time to release hundreds of years of having no feelings on the Estlorian plane.  Watching Ini-herit struggle to remember what he felt for CK when on the human plane was endearing and while I hated to see what it did to CK, it fit his personality perfectly.  I was shocked by a couple revelations during the book, but the characters they affected, handled them well.  One thing I have always enjoyed about Raine's books is how she pulls in so many characters stories even when the focus is on one person.  Learning more the others we were introduced to in this series added to the background of looking for the scroll and bringing balance to the Estlorian plane.  It's not often you find a series with strong and humorous female and male characters, and I love what Raine does with her characters.  While I know this is the last book and I LOVED how she ended it by bringing all six books together, I still can't help but more.  I guess that's the best way to end a series, all questions answered, but hard to say goodbye.
If you haven't read Defy or Shift or the Daughters of Saraqael, I would highly recommend you pick them up!  I give ELDER 5 stars!
You can BUY ELDER on Amazon or Barnes & Noble
You can also add it to your Goodreads list.

Interview with Karen Erickson

The the tour stop today, I'm pleased to have Karen Erickson with me today and she even has a little blurb from Jane's Gift for you!  Don't forget to checkout the giveaway at the end.

Thanks so much for answering my questions!  As a new reader of yours I’m really enjoying your writing and can’t wait to go back and read your other books.

And thanks so much for having me as a guest on your blog, Sarah! I’m excited to be here today.

I’ll admit I was drawn to Jane’s Gift because I come from a family of firemen, what inspired your to write Chris as a fire captain?
Well, my father is a retired battalion chief/arson investigator for CAL Fire, the state run fire department in California. As I was growing up though, he was a fire captain of a variety of stations within his ranger unit and so…the inspiration came from there. I grew up around it, just like you.

Having a main character suffer a great loss so early in the book sets the tone for the story, what was the most challenging part of creating those emotions and healing throughout the story?
I didn’t want Jane’s past to put a damper too much on the story. Of course, it molds her and makes her the woman she is today, but I didn’t want the subject matter to be too depressing.

In fact, Jane’s Gift was rejected by a well-known publisher for being too depressing. Now, that was a different version of what Entangled’s Bliss line published but hey, it is a heavy subject. Death and recovery is never easy. But I hope I filled the story with enough love and happiness to make the readers smile.

Since Jane’s Gift is the first in the Lone Pine Lake series, can you share a little about what we can expect in future books?  How many books will be in this series?
Jane’s big brother Cameron is next—his book, Cameron’s Homecoming, should be out in early spring 2013. I hope to have a total of four books in the Lone Pine Lake series. And if all goes well, Mac’s story would be next (and if you read Cam’s book, you’ll see why) and then I’d like to end it with Mindy and give her a second chance at love. Poor thing deserves it. I already have her hero picked out and everything!

Since it’s the holidays and Jane started a new Christmas tradition, do you have any special holiday traditions you and your family follow?
Of course. :) Every year we go to Christmas Tree Lane, which is in Fresno, CA (we live just above the city). We’ve been making that drive for years and even though so much of it is the same, it’s that familiarity that makes you feel good inside, right?
Another tradition—we always make and frost holiday sugar cookies. I started doing that with my grandma when I was little and I’m keeping up the tradition. It’s so much fun. The kids are so creative when they frost and of course, those cookies are delicious.

I love random questions, so here’s my last one:  What’s your favorite holiday food?
My grandma makes the best homemade scalloped potatoes—we’d always have them with ham for Christmas dinner. I need to get the recipe from her and make them myself. I’m afraid I won’t do them justice though. Hard to beat Grandma’s cooking!

Thanks so much for taking the time to answer these questions and I’m looking forward to reading more about the residents of Lone Pine Lake!
Sarah

Thank you again for having me, Sarah. Happy Holidays everyone!

Blurb for Jane’s Gift:
A fire captain afraid of commitment. A widow afraid of fire. Can the holidays bring them together? A devastating house fire cost Jane Clark nearly everything: her husband, her confidence, and her looks, with the physical scars marbling her body. Now, two years later, she's living and healing back in her childhood hometown of Lone Pine Lake. The upcoming holidays are the perfect opportunity to bring some Christmas cheer into her young children's lives, starting with a visit to the firehouse, where her brother's best friend has offered to help quell their residual fears. Lone Pine's resident playboy, fire captain Christian Nelson is happy with his single-guy lifestyle. He's an everyday local hero, so he's never wanting for attention around the holidays. But when Jane Clark shows up, Chris is immediately drawn to the beautiful widow--even though kids and commitment have never been his style. Despite her brother's warnings about his friend's playboy status and dangerous occupation, Jane can't help but fall for the gorgeous fire captain. The holidays are a time of new beginnings, but can two scarred people find the strength to let go of their pasts to live in the present, when a lifetime together might be the sweetest gift of all?

Trailer Thursday: Indigo Awakening

I am huge fan of Jordan Dane's YA books and am excited to share with you the trailer for her upcoming YA release, Indigo Awakening.

Because of what you are, the Believers will hunt you down.

In her desperate search, she meets Gabriel Stewart, a runaway with mysterious powers and far too many secrets. Rayne can’t explain her crazy need to trust the strange yet compelling boy—to touch him—to protect him even though he scares her.
A fanatical church secretly hunts psychic kids—gifted “Indigo” teens feared to be the next evolution of mankind—for reasons only “the Believers” know. Now Rayne’s only hope is Gabe, who is haunted by an awakening power—a force darker than either of them imagine—that could doom them all.

Knock, Knock....Is Anyone There?

Hey there....I bet you're shocked to be finally seeing a post from me again.  Well, sometimes LIFE gets a little busy and makes it harder to get the BOOKS part done.  I started a new job, which I LOVE, but it's been keeping me busy, along with a little 4.5 yr old son who is 200% boy (which if you have a boy, you know what I mean).  This is my first school yr since mom passed and I used to call her on the way home everyday, so it's been a little tougher than I thought.  Then throw the upcoming holidays in the mix and I've been a little emotionally distracted.

I have been reading, I promise, and I've got some great books lined up.  So now I'm just trying to find a little time to squeeze in writing all my reviews that have been rattling around in my head.  I also know I've been slacking on my Trailer Thursday posts, but those too will be caught up soon.  I'm hoping to get something written this weekend, but for sure I'll work on getting caught up when I'm off for Thanksgiving break.

So, if you're still following this blog, don't worry I'm working on getting it back up an running on a better schedule and THANKS for hanging in there with me.

Here's a little preview of the reviews coming up in the next couple months
(this way you can help hold me to  it):

Trailer Thursday ~ TEN

If you are looking for a YA book that is darker and offers some serious mystery then look no further than Gretchen McNeil's TEN!

And their doom comes swiftly.
It was supposed to be the weekend of their lives—an exclusive house party on Henry Island. Best friends Meg and Minnie each have their reasons for being there (which involve T.J., the school’s most eligible bachelor) and look forward to three glorious days of boys, booze and fun-filled luxury.
But what they expect is definitely not what they get, and what starts out as fun turns dark and twisted after the discovery of a DVD with a sinister message: Vengeance is mine.
Suddenly people are dying, and with a storm raging, the teens are cut off from the outside world. No electricity, no phones, no internet, and a ferry that isn’t scheduled to return for two days. As the deaths become more violent and the teens turn on each other, can Meg find the killer before more people die? Or is the killer closer to her than she could ever imagine?
