Review: The Sweetest Thing

by Christina Mandelski
Published by Egmont USA on May 10, 2011

Summary:
In the world of Sheridan Wells, life is perfect when she’s decorating a cake. Unfortunately, everything else is a complete mess: her mom ran off years ago, her dad is more interested in his restaurant, and the idea of a boyfriend is laughable.
But Sheridan is convinced finding her mom will solve all her problems—only her dad’s about to get a cooking show in New York, which means her dream of a perfect family will be dashed.

My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

Review:
The Sweetest Thing was a refreshing change of pace from the books I have been reading.  Sheridan has an amazing talent for designing and making cakes.  This talent is what she uses as a way to hold on to the memory of her mom, because she was an amazing cake decorator before she left town.  I really enjoyed The Sweetest Thing and the emotions that Sheridan had to go through to finally find peace in the situation with her mom.  While I think I would have been totally excited to move to New York and start over, I can see how the familiar of her hometown as the last place she saw her mom drove her to not want to leave.  My heart did break for her at some of the lessons she had to learn, but that is apart of life and having family and friends there helped make it bearable.

Like the title, this is a very sweet book that has some funny teenage moments sprinkled throughout.  I really enjoyed The Sweetest Thing and I know the students that I teach will enjoy it too.  In my opinion, if you are looking for a wonderful middle grades/YA book that will make you smile, laugh and has a sweet romance then this is the book for you.
