Review: Fever

Release Date: February 21, 2012
Publisher: Simon & Schuster

Summary:
Running away brings Rhine and Gabriel right into a trap, in the form of a twisted carnival whose ringmistress keeps watch over a menagerie of girls. Just as Rhine uncovers what plans await her, her fortune turns again. With Gabriel at her side, Rhine travels through an environment as grim as the one she left a year ago - surroundings that mirror her own feelings of fear and hopelessness.
The two are determined to get to Manhattan, to relative safety with Rhine’s twin brother, Rowan. But the road there is long and perilous - and in a world where young women only live to age twenty and young men die at twenty-five, time is precious. Worse still, they can’t seem to elude Rhine’s father-in-law, Vaughn, who is determined to bring Rhine back to the mansion...by any means necessary.
In the sequel to Lauren DeStefano’s harrowing Wither, Rhine must decide if freedom is worth the price - now that she has more to lose than ever.
My Review: 3.5 stars

I still love how Lauren writes and the emotion that is present through out Fever, but there was just something about the story that didn't grab me as much as the first one did.  I think it was the weakness in Rhine at times, but I also know weakness is human.  Fever is a darker book compared to Wither, but then again the world they live in isn't exactly all sunshine and roses.  In Fever, Rhine discovers a that maybe everything on the outside has changed in the short time she has been away and it gave Gabriel a chance to see the world through Rhine's eyes.  There are new characters introduced during their stay as Madame's captives and I hope we get to find out a little more about what happens to Lilac, Maddie and Jared in the third book.  And I WILL be waiting impatiently to read that third book of the Chemical Garden Trilogy as Lauren left one heck of a cliffhanger.

I have so many questions: What does Gabriel think?  How long did Cecily know what Vaughn was doing?  Did her brother stop looking for her?  Can they find a cure?  What happens to Lilac, Maddie and Jared?  I have more questions, but since I don't want to spoil anything I will keep them to myself.

I really can't wait to see how she wraps up this gripping and unique story.  While I liked Wither better than Fever, it is still a must read for fans of Wither and if you haven't read Wither yet, What are you waiting for?!

  1. I'm glad there's someone out there who didn't just "love" this book. I was kind of dissapointed when I read it. It was just there to fill the gap of a trilogy to me. I'm curious to see how it ends though.

  2. I have the same exact questions. I would love to see a short story from Gabriel's point of view!
